The price for packing an 8-megapixel sensor into a phone is that it’s large and heavy for a phone. At 4.2 x 2.1 x 0.7 inches and 3.2 ounces, the i8510 could pass for a dedicated camera in a blind test. It certainly dwarfs the ZN5, which is 0.5 inches thick at its thinnest point. The sturdy sliding action reminds us of the Motorola Z9, another slider that stands out for its long, heavy form. Like the Z9, it also has a flat keypad, only with raised metal lines separating the rows instead of metal nubs beneath each key. They keys themselves glow white when the phone is turned on.

The front face of the i8510 has a bright 2.8-inch screen. Beneath it is a five-way, square-shaped navigational pad, flanked by twin soft keys, Answer and End keys, and two dedicated buttons for accessing the menu and media. The Curve 8350i is the sharpest 8300 series Curve we’ve ever come across. The piano black device has a similarly colored keyboard with yellow accents around its trackball and push-to-talk button. While the 8350i has the same 340 x 320-pixel, 2.5-inch display as older Curves, the resolution is not as high as current BlackBerrys, such as the Curve 8900 (480 x 360) or Bold (480 x 320). The 8350i, at 4.4 x 2.4 x 0.7 inches, is a bit bigger than the standard Curve (which measures 4.2 x 2.4 x 0.6 inches). The reason for its extra bulk is likely the iDEN radio and the required room for the larger 1400-mAh lithium ion battery, which replaces the standard 1150-mAh one.

A small yellow Nextel logo decorates the bottom of the unit. On the left you’ll find a 2.5mm headphone jack, which unfortunately replaces the much more usable 3.5mm jack found on most Curves. There’s also a microUSB charging port on the left side. Volume controls and a quick-launch button that defaults to the camera launcher are on the right side.

The whole unit is made of plastic but feels well built and sturdy, and comes with two covers, one gray and the other with stylish floral swirls. The Nokia N97 has a large 3.5-inch, 640 x 360-pixel resolution resistive touchscreen that dominates the phone’s face. Its display is flanked by touch-sensitive Send/End keys that lay flush with the screen’s surface, as well as a chrome Main Menu key. The slide-out QWERTY keyboard helps the N97 stand out against other N-series devices, which typically sport alphanumeric keypads. Overall the phone feels somewhat bulky at 4.6 x 2.2 x 0.6 inches and 5.3 ounces.

The N97 has a chrome border around its entire face, and a matte black (or white on the white model) battery cover that has a small lip at the bottom for easy gripping. T-Mobile myTouch 3G

The myTouch 3G, the second Android phone in the U.S. market, is well suited for T-Mobile users who like the idea of owning a chic touchscreen phone with a good browser and plenty of apps. Designed by HTC, the $199 myTouch 3G ditches the T-Mobile G1’s physical QWERTY keyboard for a sleeker profile. With its greater emphasis on customization, search, and battery life, it’s our current Android phone of choice, but there are a few features that could be improved.

BlackBerry Curve 8520 T-Mobile

With the BlackBerry 8520, RIM has created a well-rounded smart phone for an unbeatable price. Offered through T-Mobile for $129 but sold at Wal-Mart for just $48.88 (and Amazon.com for one cent) this smart phone features the same excellent keyboard and data services that BlackBerry users have grown to love. Plus, RIM has added a responsive trackpad (in place of the trackball) and dedicated media keys for music playback, in addition to the ability to make unlimited calls over Wi-Fi networks. The Curve 8520 is a bit watered down compared to higher-end BlackBerrys—it lacks 3G data, GPS, and a high-res screen—but among T-Mobile phones this device offers the best bang for your buck.

HTC Hero best Touchscreen Smart Phones

The HTC Hero is Sprint’s first Android phone, and is arguably the best Android device on the U.S. market today. It sports HTC’s custom Sense interface for home screen multitasking, a 5-megapixel camera, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Plus, this device offers pretty snappy performance, addressing the biggest complaint reviewers have had with the European version. These features—paired with its full Microsoft Exchange support—make the $179 Hero a top-notch smart phone.

Samsung Instinct HD Sprint Touchscreen Phone

The Instinct family has been all about budget-friendly pricing for quality features, such as a full HTML browser, a music store, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a decent touchscreen experience. The Instinct HD goes in a different direction with such features as a 5-megapixel camera, HD video recording, Wi-Fi, and a smart phone-like $249 price tag. While the Instinct HD has enough features to sound like a jack of all trades, it costs more than many of today’s hottest smart phones, which offer a lot more apps and a more robust experience when it comes to e-mail, messaging, and social networks.

Motorola Android Smart Phone Cliq (T-Mobile)

The black, reinforced stainless steel body of the Motorola Cliq (also available in Winter White) measures 4.5 x 2.3 x 0.6 inches and weighs 5.7 ounces. The myTouch 3G, by comparison, is a bit smaller at 4.4 x 2.2 x 0.6 inches, and weighs a much lighter 4.1 ounces. To be fair, though, the myTouch 3G doesn’t include a physical keyboard, and the new Storm2 (which lacks a keyboard) weighs 5.6 ounces.

The front of the Cliq features a 3.1-inch, 480 x 320-pixel capacitive touchscreen display, as well as three navigation buttons: a menu key, a Home button, and a return key. Unfortunately, the device does not currently support multitouch gestures. Volume controls, a mini-USB charging port, and a silent mode toggle switch are on the left side of the phone. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack on top, and a camera quick-launch button and lock/power key are on the right side.

BlackBerry Storm2 Wireless Verizon

It’s really more like a do-over than a sequel. While the original BlackBerry Storm suffered from sluggish performance, glitchy software, and a maddening touchscreen keyboard, the Storm2 fixes nearly everything we criticized about the earlier device. It’s faster (especially when surfing the Web), more stable, and typing is more accurate and feels less like a chore. Plus, RIM has added Wi-Fi connectivity, and doubled the amount of onboard memory. But just because the Storm2 is better than its predecessor doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better than the competition.

HTC Imagio Touch Interface and TV Playback

A multimedia and business powerhouse, it’s a device that will please business users and casual owners alike, if you can get used to the resistive touchscreen.

Motorola Droid Smart Phone Verizon Wireless

It’s the first device in Verizon Wireless’ lineup in a long time that we would call cool. And that means a lot, especially since it seems as though the carrier’s customers have been whining (and rightfully so) for the two-plus years the iPhone has been available. The Droid from Motorola is not only a cut above the BlackBerry Storm2, but every other Android phone in terms of its rock-solid design and speed. The 3.7-inch display is positively huge, and for the first time on any smart phone you get free turn-by-turn GPS navigation. Plus, with the new Android 2.0 OS under the hood, you can reach out to contacts any way you like (phone, text, e-mail, Facebook) with a tap.

Android Phone Samsung Moment (Sprint)

The first thing we noticed when we unboxed the silver-and-black Samsung Moment was its bulk. Measuring 4.6 x 2.3 x 0.4 inches and weighing 5.7 ounces, it looks and feels brick-like (though it’s a little lighter than the Motorola Droid). That said, it does pack a full QWERTY keyboard underneath the screen.

Our attention quickly turned to the Moment’s beautiful 3.6-inch, 480 x 320-pixel active matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) display, which is brilliant, bright, and colorful. When we showed the Moment to a friend carrying a BlackBerry Tour, he said that he thought his screen had dimmed or was broken. The screen is capacitive touch-enabled, but does not support multitouch gestures like the HTC Hero.

BlackBerry Bold 9700 (T-Mobile)

RIM’s flagship Bold 9700 (a.k.a. Bold 2) follows in the footsteps of the original premium BlackBerry Bold on AT&T and features a slimmer design, better camera, and both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. Plus, unlike the AT&T version of this smart phone, the T-Mobile 9700 ($199 with two-year contract) lets you make unlimited calls over Wi-Fi. The browser leaves a lot to be desired, but if you want a powerful messaging device with a great keyboard, this is as good as it gets.

Palm Pixi (Sprint) Affordable Smart Phone

Not since the Motorola Razr have we been impressed with just how much technology a phone maker has crammed into such a thin and light design. Measuring 4.4 x 2.2 x 0.4 inches, the Pixi is taller but much more svelte than the bulbous Pre (3.9 x 2.3 x 0.7 inches); the Pixi even cuts a smaller profile than the iPhone 3GS (4.5 x 2.4 x 0.5 inches). More surprising is just how feather-light this smart phone is, weighing in at just 3.3 ounces. Compared to the Pre and iPhone 3GS (both 4.8 ounces), you’ll barely notice the Pixi is in your pocket.

Garmin Nuvifone G60 (AT&T)

The Nuvifone is attractively compact. It feels solid and has a bit of heft to it (weighing 4.8 ounces and measuring 4.4 x 2.3 x 0.6 inches). Its smooth, soft texture feels good in the hand. The front of the G60 is dominated by the 3.5-inch touchscreen. The front also carries a little branding, but no controls. The power button is on the top, and once you’ve tapped it you’ll need to double-tap the screen to unlock the phone.

The left side holds the mini-USB port and microSD Card slot; the right side holds the volume and camera buttons; and the back holds the 3-megapixel camera lens. We weren’t crazy about the touchscreen, as it didn’t recognize our inputs accurately; we often clicked an icon when we were trying to scroll.

Garmin has created a custom operating system for the Nuvifone. The start screen shows two columns, one with big icons labeled Call, Search, and View Map, and another with smaller icons labeled Calendar, Camera, Ciao (a social networking feature), Contacts, E-mail, Music Player, Settings, Text Messages, Tools, Weather, and Web Browser.

HTC Droid Eris Wireless Verizon

The $99.99 (with two-year contract and $100 mail-in rebate) Droid Eris is the smart phone for Verizon Wireless customers who are looking for something more pocket friendly and affordable than the Motorola Droid. While the Eris doesn’t have the latest Android 2.0 operating system or that other Droid’s high-resolution display, you get the intuitive Sense user interface and very good Facebook and Twitter integration. Add in a rock solid industrial design and a first-class Web browser (complete with multitouch support), and you have one of the best smart phones under $100. However, the Eris is not necessarily a better deal than its $179 cousin on Sprint.
